SD-WAN: Connect business sites securely, flexibly and resiliently

Multiple locations, cloud applications and business-critical data flows increase the demands placed on corporate networks. SD-WAN introduces software-defined control that can bring different access links, applications and security requirements into a more centrally managed architecture.

Where traditional site networking starts to struggle

Many corporate networks grow incrementally: a new branch, additional cloud services, remote work, mobile access and different access technologies. This can work for years, but it becomes harder to manage and monitor as complexity increases.

SD-WAN adds a software-defined control layer above the available connections. Traffic can be steered according to applications, quality requirements and available paths.

Plan resilience, cloud and security together

A major benefit emerges when multiple suitable access paths are available. If one connection fails, traffic can be redirected automatically depending on the architecture, while business-critical applications can be prioritised.

Security is also moving closer to the network architecture. Modern SD-WAN offerings combine central control with firewall, segmentation and other security capabilities. For cloud environments, organisations should also consider how applications in Azure, AWS or other platforms are connected.

  • manage sites and cloud environments more centrally
  • combine multiple access technologies intelligently
  • prioritise critical applications
  • design failover and redundancy deliberately
  • consider managed services for operations and administration

High availability: protect access links and site devices separately

Access redundancy and device availability are different tasks. Two connections on a single site device (CPE) can mitigate a link failure, but the site can still lose network access if that device fails. A suitable HA design therefore also considers redundant devices, power supplies and connections to the local network.

Check whether the connections are genuinely independent: shared entry routes, network components or power supplies can affect both paths at once. Validate and document failover and recovery with critical applications. Measurable acceptance criteria and agreed service levels provide a firmer basis than a blanket promise of uninterrupted availability.

  • review access-link, device and power failures as separate scenarios
  • confirm access-path independence with the network partners involved
  • validate failover, recovery and application access together

International sites: consistent control, local requirements

SD-WAN can also be considered for connecting sites across several countries. A shared target architecture supports planning for applications, access policies and operations across borders.

Implementation requires an individual availability check for each country, address and solution. Include local access links, device delivery, cloud traffic paths, support, service levels and any necessary legal reviews in the site matrix. A general SD-WAN capability does not establish confirmed availability or identical service at every international location.

Why technology selection should not start with a product name

The market offers multiple SD-WAN platforms with different strengths in security, orchestration, cloud integration and operations. The right decision should therefore begin with business requirements rather than a single vendor.
